theGro:club for people leaders is a big hit

theGrogroup set up a club for in-house HR, learning and development, talent and people professionals with the core focus of creating a strong community where knowledge, ideas and challenges can be shared with opportunities to learn and improve.

The first club event took place earlier this month at the White Collar Factory – a great example of a workplace of the future, complete with a 150m rooftop running track. Twenty professionals joined Kate and Paul from theGrogroup including people from PwC, Reassure, the5%club, Browne Jacobson, Smith&Williamson and Sanlam.

Pre event it was quickly identified that “diversity and inclusion” is at the top of the priority list for many, and we were delighted to be joined by Daniel Snell and the team from Arrival education for our first event.

Arrival education is an award-winning talent and development business with over a decade’s experience working with thousands of socially and ethnically early years talent and globally recognised brands.

Daniel Snell, their co-founder, kicked off by looking at how forward thinking organisations can better attract, retain and develop diverse talent and why it’s business critical. On the back of some recent research in their network Daniel was able to share some really interesting personal insights on why businesses struggle as well as how companies can potentially resolve some of the challenges.

After a quick grab and go lunch break, we continued on the diversity topic covering  “how to build an inclusive coaching culture” with Emily Shenton from Arrival sharing how she and her team have coached over 1,000 senior executives

We were very fortunate to have the time of the final year University student, Akshay, who came straight from lectures at Kings college, and very movingly shared his story reflecting on some of the challenges diverse talent typically have to overcome in life, education and employment – a truly inspiring story, that really highlighted the challenges and the differences us and our employers can make.

Commenting on the event, Louise Haisman from Quantuma said “Every now and then you hear a truly inspiring story or meet individuals who are making a real difference. Thank you to Daniel and Emily for sharing the ethos behind and the great work Arrival education are doing transforming lives and enabling brilliant young people from challenging or socially deprived backgrounds to thrive and become business leaders of the future. So much untapped potential with so much to offer. It was especially poignant hearing Akshay’s story and to know he has a bright future ahead of him.”

The next Gro:club event will be taking place in the summer – the  top three “hot topics” on the table for discussion include leadership, culture and influence.
